BMW Motorrad introduces the new Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) to its lineup of high-performance motorcycles, presenting an innovative technical solution for a more uncomplicated and more comfortable riding experience. As the motto implies, “simplify your ride,” the clutch and gear-shifting automation improves the riding experience without compromising the emotionally important shifting dynamics.
The Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) provides a fully automated clutch operation, including automatic or manual shifting, for optimized riding enjoyment. It features a unique functional design with two technically controlled electrochemical actuators responsible for the clutch and gearshift of the six-speed transmission’s automation. It marks the main distinction to a conventional shift assistant. The ASA system improves starting, stopping, and maneuvering since you don’t manually require a hand lever to operate the clutch.
Using the clutch and gearstick requires a lot of concentration, especially when traveling with a passenger or luggage. The automated clutch and gear shifting provide a new riding experience and flexibility, allowing you to stay in control in every situation. It makes riding a more relaxed and pleasurable experience.
The fast rev- and load-adapted shift sequences resulted in precise gear changes in the Automated Shift Assistant, reducing the rider’s workload and making riding more enjoyable. Besides, the ASA system establishes an even more direct connection with the robust boxer engine since the precise clutch actuation makes it easier to manage the riding experience through the gearshift lever and throttle grip.
Riders benefit extensively from seamlessly executed gear changes with a smooth interruption of traction in both the “M” and “D” modes. Thus, it ensures improved riding stability and efficient motorcycle acceleration, eliminating the chances of engine stalling due to unfavorable gear shifts. The Assisted Shift Assistance allows the rider to determine when gear changes occur since it can be made by foot control in the ‘M’ shift mode. Conversely, the ASA feature allows the engine control unit to choose shift points automatically in “D” shift mode. As a result, it automatically adapts the gear shifts to dynamic preferences.
